Brief report for Portsmouth City Girls School
Workshop 3/3/04. Artist - Sally Haynes
After an interesting introduction to the school and the viewing of the previous work done by CATALYST and members of the school, we were introduced to the participating students. I myself working on the Sensory Area of Taste (SWEET). I encouraged the students to think about words used to describe this experience. We talked briefly about the tip of the tongue where this taste is experienced. Using a digital camera with the girls to show their work as it progressed, the girls used words about their sensory experience - the chocolates went down well.
I introduced them to overwriting pens, layering words, using papers and colours associated with their 'sweet' knowledge and experience. They produced their own work which explored this individually and in combination with each other. The resulting 3 lolly pops illustrated their own particular method and chosen media. The girls were also introduced to ideas through the camera of selecting out areas of work which could be extended further. I felt that it was exciting and there was a continual exchange of ideas and processes.
