MAKE UP A MOSAIC - 2001

Tutor: Jan O'Highway
Venue: Upper gallery, Mountbatten Gallery, Guildhall Square, Portsmouth

The workshop will focus on genetic structures - how we currently understand the physical 'make up' of life, and how this is portrayed in scientific magazines and the press. Discussion will be followed by a demonstration of mosaic techniques and design work, leading into the the making of a small mosaic.

The completed mosaics can be combined together to make a permament panel for the school. Previous to the practical session, the tutor will have met with the students and staff in school, visual ideas being stimulated by illustrations from New Scientist (a journal which is exceptional in it's imaginative use of imagery to interpret complex concepts) and slides of mosaics. Following this, student's will make preparatory studies to bring to the workshop in the Gallery.

Documentation of work in progress, and photographs of the completed works, will be included in the Catalyst exhibition.

Materials used : glass and ceramic tessarae, pebbles, mirror, and found objects, on a base of wood or ceramic. Students can each expect to complete one or two pieces approximately 6" square.
