CATALYST Workshops
Cells, Viruses and Bacteria - 1999
Collective images of cells produced at the Gallery workshop
The girls were given a brief, explaining the different types of cells in the human body. They were given a choice of cells and then asked to investigate what type of virus or bacteria would be likely to infect the cell they'd chosen.
As an introduction to the workshop, they were taken to meet Vanessa Peters, Micro-biologist in her laboratory in the St, Michaels Building, University of Portsmouth. The girls slipped into lab coats and were instructed to observe health and safety regulations.
Once settled, they were shown cultures and slides of bacteria and viruses and asked to make drawings of their finding in sketch books I had provided. In addition I prepared visual material, showing the use of colour and layering techniques, in
order to out line what was expected of them.
The brief encouraged the discipline of observation with the added task of adapting the drawings of the organisms to a larger scale.
The second stage took part back at the school in the science Lab. With the use of sketch books and additional material provided by Sheena Wright, Head of Science, the girls set about the task of enlarging the drawn material up to A1 in size. They made templates of the various cells, viruses and bacteria in readiness for the next stage.
