Catalyst 10 - Messenger - 2004

Messenger explores the dynamics and stimulation which are the artist’s and scientist’s journey into the mysteries of the brain and it’s science.

The exhibition programme is a significant landmark for the group. Firstly, it marks Catalyst’s tenth anniversary as an international group, and as such, we are proud to acknowledge our continued links with members and other organisations in America, Australia, Nigeria and Senegal.

Secondly, throughout 2004 we will be working on our new Virtual Gallery site which has been funded by The Arts Council of England. The work shown on this site will be the result of two exhibitions, a series of workshops and collaborative pieces by both artists and scientists - centered on the brain.

Stage one of the process was the exhibition at Havant Art Gallery. This consisted of both 2 and 3 dimensional works, examples of which can be seen on this page. In addition there was a free Woven Histories workshop.

Stage two took the form of a collaborative perspex installation at Portsmouth’s Mountbatten Gallery, Guildhall Square, Portsmouth from 1-19th March 2004. The latter exhibition conjoined with the International Women’s Week Forum on the 6th March where we collectively celebrated International Women’s Day. In recognition of the day Catalyst hosted three free workshops in which children and adults were encouraged to join in.

MESSENGER INTERACTIVE

As well as displaying the Messenger artwork on this page, we have also created a virtual gallery space. This is designed to show the work in a more traditional (albeit digital) environment.

To view the gallery you will have to download and install the Cortona viewer. The link below will take you to a page where the method of doing this is explained. If you are a little nervous about downloading software please accept our assurances that it has been thoroughly checked and tested for bugs and compatibility with all computer operating systems.

Once Cortona is installed on your machine you can enter the gallery as described on the first page you see after clicking the link. We recommend that you read the 'Help' files which are available via a link at the bottom of the gallery screen. Cortona is a complex piece of software which offers a variety of methods of touring the gallery which you may not notice without some guidance.
